1️⃣ Technical Knowledge Point: Precision Control of Grinding Process
Knowledge Source: Knowledge Base 05_Processing/02_Gear Machining/04_Gear Grinding.md
Gear grinding is the most mainstream finishing method for high-precision gears — DIN 3~6 grade precision is almost exclusively achieved through grinding.
| Grinding Method | Wheel Type | Applicable Module | Precision Range | Features |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generating (worm wheel) | Worm grinding wheel | m1~m6 | DIN 4~5 | High efficiency, suitable for batch production |
| Form grinding (form wheel) | Form grinding wheel | m3~m12 | DIN 3~5 | Higher precision ceiling, suitable for large modules |
Key Control Points:
- Grinding burn: Carburized surface hardness 58~62 HRC. Improper heat control during grinding can cause temper burn or re-hardening burn, leading to early fatigue spalling
- Wheel dressing frequency: Worm wheel typically dressed every 10~30 pieces, CNC dressed with diamond roller
- Allowance allocation: Rough grind 0.15
0.25mm → Finish grind 0.030.05mm. Strictly control finish allowance consistency
Practical insight: The most common rework causes for grinding are surface roughness overshoot (Ra>0.8μm) and tooth profile deviation. Prioritize efficiency during rough grinding; reduce feed rate and increase dressing frequency during finish grinding.
2️⃣ Technical Knowledge Point: Gear Steel Material Selection Reference
Knowledge Source: Knowledge Base 04_Materials/01_Steel/01_Gear Steel.md
| Steel Grade | Heat Treatment | Tensile MPa | Hardness | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20CrMnTi | Carburize + low temper | ≥1080 | Core 30~42 HRC | Auto transmission gears (most common) |
| 20CrMo | Carburize + low temper | ≥885 | Core 30~42 HRC | Small-medium module gears, minimal distortion |
| 20CrNi2Mo | Carburize + low temper | ≥1180 | Core 35~45 HRC | Heavy-duty axle gears, impact-resistant |
| 42CrMo | Q&T | ≥1080 | 269~321 HB | Heavy-duty gear shafts |
| 40Cr | Q&T | ≥980 | 241~286 HB | Medium-speed medium-load gears |
| 45# | Q&T | ≥650 | 217~255 HB | Low-speed light-load gears |
Selection Logic:
- Impact loads → Choose Ni-series steel (20CrNi2Mo), high core toughness
- Distortion control required → Choose 20CrMo, good carburizing stability
- Heavy-duty low-speed → Q&T steel 42CrMo / 40Cr, lower cost
- Key incoming inspection items: Inclusion grade (A/B/C/D type ≤ Grade 2.5) and Grain size (Grade 5~8) — these two items directly determine post-heat-treatment distortion and fatigue life
3️⃣ Today’s Reflection: Balancing Gear Grinding Efficiency and Precision
An ongoing discussion direction in the industry is how to improve grinding efficiency while maintaining tooth surface integrity.
Current Pain Points:
- Precision ceiling of dry-cut gears (powder metallurgy/precision forging) is DIN 6~7; most automotive transmissions still require grinding
- Worm wheel grinding is highly efficient (1~3 min per piece), but wheel dressing time accounts for a large proportion
- Form grinding has high precision but low efficiency (5~15 min per piece)
Possible Breakthrough Directions:
- Expanded CBN wheel application — wear resistance 10× higher than aluminum oxide wheels, dressing interval from 30 pieces → 300 pieces
- In-process gauging and compensation — real-time measurement of tooth profile deviation during grinding, CNC adjusts feed path
- High-speed grinding — wheel linear speed from traditional 35m/s to 80~120m/s, increased single-pass grinding depth
For Geyontech, if customer orders are mainly m3~m8 medium-high precision gears, it is recommended to prioritize configuring a high-speed CBN form grinding machine, balancing precision (DIN 4) and efficiency (<5 min per piece).
